A combi conversion removes the separate hot-water cylinder and provides heating and hot water from one boiler. It can free space and simplify the system—but it is not automatically the best option for every property.
What changes?
The existing cylinder and, where applicable, cold-water storage tank are removed. Pipework is altered so hot water comes from the combi on demand. The installation may also require changes to the gas supply, flue, condensate route and controls.
Where a combi works well
- You want to recover cupboard or loft space
- Hot-water demand is moderate
- The mains supply has suitable flow and pressure
- You prefer hot water without storing it in a cylinder
When a cylinder may be better
Homes with several showers or outlets running together can need more hot water than a combi can comfortably deliver. Low mains pressure or flow can also limit performance.
